Nokia 770 - baby steps

Today I flashed the thing to the December 30 firmware. it went without event and I was able to restore my bookmarks without trouble.

But since it was easy, that got me motivated to do some things I probably should have done a long time ago.

following the instructions in this thread:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1003.html

I applied the binary patch to the firmware and re-uploaded it it to the device so now I should be able to setup a swap file/partition on the device if I so desire.

I've been following the thread here:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-640.html

On the details of actually creating a swap file or partition and for now I created a 16MB file on the the original 64MB flash card for that purpose, I do occasionally run out of memory with a couple browser windows open, particularly the flash plugin can eat memory like it's going out of style...

Actual usable ebook reader with electronic paper may show up any day now.

One step closer to The Diamond Age.

Even being conservative e-paper should revolutionize display technology as volume goes up and costs come down. super low-power applications, flexibility, compactness and high resolution ought to enable the placement of digital displays on virtually any object.

Crapy proprietary e-book readers are just the start of course, as manufactureing ramps up and margins shrink all sorts of devices will start to feature displays made out of this stuff...

watches for sure.

Acer al2416w

Got one of these just the other day, don't know if I get to keep it or if it goes to someone else.

So, it's a decent monitor, the controls are simple, though it could really used a dedicated button to switch between the dvi and analog interfaces. It has one bad (blue) pixel on the left side of the center, not bad for 2.3 million pixel display. It's about the same price as the dell 2405 fpw when they're running a sale on that ~$900.

For scale, the monitor it's sitting in front of is a 21" Viewsonic pf815.

I still see this thing in my dreams...

I find myself really wanting to do something about the Subaru, it's been showing it's age for a couple years, but the only thing I can really get myself excited about is a car thats about 3 years older, kind of a fuel hog and undoubtedly a maintenace nightmare given additional complexity inherent in high-end luxury cars... C'est la vie, I lusted after one of these when I was twelve.

I drove Lucy's bimmer (94 318is) up to Seattle and back and got ~34MPG doing a hair under 70 most of the way.

The office...
