the thing has 400k routes but it doesn't really need them, in fact they're just cluttering up the fib.

There are basically three place this parameter can be tuned.

in the sshd_config (to adjust on the server daemon)

in the ssh_config (to adjust for the client on a system-wide basis)

or in the user's ~/.ssh/config file (to adjust just for yourself)

what's the right interval?

I'm persistently afraid of timers with a 60 second interval so I aimed to get below that. A proper approach would be 3x the number of keep-alives as the theoretical timer (60s) but 30s is still about 86400 packets a month just to keep this session alive so increasing the frequency if this works is somewhat wasteful.

So color me disapointed...

Electric cars appear to be the exclusive domain of hobbyists and crackpot commercial ventures at this point. Still even as hobbyiest go it was pretty disapointing, a BMW 2002 with 800 pounds of lead acid batteries on board is not the sort of thing that makes me think this exercise is worthwhile. The rav4-ev's were cool but they're now 8 years old and climbing, still with about double the range and less silly problems than any of the other vehicles I saw you have to really wonder. Toyota could produce another one tomorrow. And a few weird people in the valley would buy one but to what end? Where's the electric car for me?

Still unless you've already got a blackberry setup and plan on using the blackberry connect client, or plan on using mail for exchange, the built-in imap client is not super awesome. So what do you get for your $400 besides several sometimes indifferent email client choices?

A decent (good actually) browser based on khtml and kjs from the the konquerer web-browser. The same broswer engine powers safari on macos and the iphone. for something rendering to a 320x240 screen it's generally good. flash support is fairly obsolete, I find it slightly absurd that I'm dependant on proprietary adobe products to the extent that I am but there you are.
A sip voip client that generally works pretty well, but only over wifi... You can extend it's functionality with the gizmo project client or fring.
A qwerty keyboard that makes the pim apps sms and web browsing genuinely easier.

What don't you get?

A touch screen. They're just better for some apps. At the same time, if it requires giving up the keyboard it's not worth it.
Seamless roaming in and out of wifi and cellular connectivity with always on networking.
Linux
A 3.5mm jack plug. media without headphones is useless. The pop-port can be adapted but at best that's an annoyance.

I guess you can see where I'm going with this, or at least where my sensibilities lie. The e series devices make a reasonable stab at being the best phone out there but they come across more as very good phones and less as general purpose computers.

We've come a long way since Hans and I first bought the lamb-rt router in 2001, something that cost $600 and was about the size of a pack of cigarettes... It didn't quite do what we wanted (portable multicast beacon) due to it''s 16MB of ram but it was an interesting learning experience. We eventually did succeed in building the beacon on the half as expensive twice as fast and 3x as big soekris 4521. These days I routinely run all sorts of things on wireless accesspoint/routers (buffalo whr-g54S, buffalo whr-hp-g54, linksys etc), that have been converted to run open-wrt, but there's never quite enough power in the seriously low-end hardware (though cheap is nice)

Intel core based mini-itx mainboards now exist in reasonable profusion so there is a big step-up for applications needing something more powerful than a via c7 cpu... On the other end, 500mhz AMD geod processor based mini-itx boards are also hitting the market for still lower powered devices.

The original 2001 mini-itx motherboards are literally still in the marketplace so there's a certain amount of endurance that the embedded systems have that simply doesn't exist in the consumer space.

Small things that caught my eye recently:

MSI fuzzy 945GM2 - Intel mainboard, 3 ethernets + pci express. Quite powerful

soekris net 5501 - Finally shipped! AMD geod based 4 ethernets + mini-pci and regular pci...

I've been working on using the nokia mobile vpn client on the phones, which frankly isn't as easy to use as it should be. This entry is the catchall for mobile vpn related materials.

The vpn client is know to work with cisco vpn 3000, nokia ip vpn, and checkpoint vpn-1. configuring it to work against other vpn endpoints shouldn't be extremely hard, though testing a configuration requires creating an installer so the debug cycle can be a bit protracted. The phone is not highly verbose in idicating what's wrong so you need accessto the vpn endpoint in order ot do reasonable debugging.

Roughly speaking the course of action goes something like this:

configure vpn endpoint
adjust text configuration files to taste
generate an installer
sign the installer
install on phone
activate profile

The market for stand-alone non-phone devices is evaporating at a rapid clip, but even so there used to be dozens of products in this space, heck there used to be other palm-os liscensees. The smell of defeat is in the air.

This is the environment in which you have to make a purchasing decision though? Breakfast cerial box displays are better organized than this. Partially that's the fault of fry's but it's not like office-depot or comp-usa is better, and if anything fry's has more devices. You're better off, buying sight-unseen online. I looks to me like HP who basically invented the PDA business with msdos running palmtops (hp lx) may end up being the last player in the marketplace for a straight-up pda though since they do windows smart phones as well who knows.

N800 vs the Sony Mylo

I kind of actually want to like the Mylo because it's a Linux box but I just can't... The UI is pretty much like a psp or similar, the keyboard isn't to bad, though it's a domed membrane like the Sony CLIE palm-os pda's had. The device just doesn't seem very flexible though and it's doesn't seem like they are making noises about producing an improved one. Not actively trying to create a developer community around the thing will limit what looks like an already abridged life-span. In some respect it's like sony's be-os based web-browsing appliance, a one-off attempt based on a desire to fill a niche market that may or may not exist.

The Nokia 800 (which just arrived here) opens up some new possibilities. For one, The battery lasts all day now even with the wifi connected. While the 770 never really shut off presence apps didn't quite work because the wireless was off to conserve battery, now like your phone and unlike you laptop the n800 will just be on all the time. It automatically associates with configured ap's when in range.

The elements that make a phone an ubiquitous always-on communications tool are falling into place for the network computer.

So I've noticed now that I have more than one abode, that online merchants frequently use your billing address on your credit card as an authorization token, without herculean effort that is the only address they will ship to.

This presents a problem if you are shuttling between states. Sensible merchants (IE Amazon) can cope with someone shipping to an address you don't reside at (how else does one send gifts) or event sending multiple items in the same order to different locations.

But my biggest issue ultimately is that as indication of authorization to perform an action billing address is a pretty poor token. Digital signatures have basically failed in the consumer space if that's the best we can do frankly.

On the face of it identity theft involving moving mailing addresses doesn't seem that hard, or maybe I'm missing something.

You can of course add additional shipping addresses to credit cards and many retailers will accept those but how many addresses do you have to have (6 or 8 ) before you can't remember which address is associated with which card?

Clearly gesture based touch screen interfaces for widescreen media playing devices are so revolutionary that no-one has ever-thought of that before apple...

If it one thing that the 770 has taught me about UI design, it's that onscreen keyboards are easy to implement and use. Even so, little chicklet plastic keys are faster to type on. For gross gestures and modal interface controls, the touch screen is great (better than alternatives like the joystick and mousing). The UI can respond accordingly, when control are grabbed or manipulated.

Typing is a different activity than UI navigation. For me, I mostly touch types. I'd rather be focusing on the output while my fingers are busy with the input, so tactile rather than visual feedback is important and the area under my fingers is not the target of visual attention. Maybe there are interfaces that are better (faster requiring less attention) than typing, but for now a competent typist is still faster with a crap chicklet keyboard then someone typing on a screen keyboard that's obscuring half the display, area.

I'm cool with that sort of approach I guess, it's a consumer appliance after all, and the 770 was more of a prototype than an actual product.

Nonetheless the sinking feeling when I got the message that the 770 wouldn't see another software release was sort of like having a pet die. I relate to Linux machines differently than I do to say phones, they're more extensible, they expose more of the inner workings, you negotiate with the operating system rather than being held hostage by it like on a normal embedded communications device.

I have gotten a lot of value out of device since I ordered it in November of 2005 certainly it was $350 well spent. I should order the n800 right now I guess but I haven't quite worked up to it.

There's some question in my mind here about how people relate to objects of varying levels of sophistication and interactivity. I don't really get all that concerned when my toaster gets discontinued by sunbeam, that my 30 year old Beosystem is obsolete or that next year Honda will release a newer slightly restyled version of my car. I didn't get that upset when I bricked my n91 by flashing the firmware (it's just a phone after all), but when something that like many open-source products has a built-in assumption of routine software releases to enhance it's functionality gets discontinued, a little part of it dies. Some pieces of hardware take on a life of their own long after they're technically obsolete and abandoned by their manufacturers (the Newton and the Amiga come to mind) but that's by no means guaranteed, classic electronic devices aren't really that numerous.
